University of Glamorgan Trefforest campus, boiler house facade.

Site specific intervention experiments

Early experiments were a combination of wooden and melamine boxes in conjunction with the installation of a weathered, slavaged interior Victorian door. Taking up ideas from Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space the work explored ideas of the dialectics of outside and inside, and the threshold.

Positioning the door on the utilitarian, modernist looking wall of the boiler house was a powerful statement that seemed deflected by the presence of the boxes. The door alone suggested a past layered onto a present; fusing  these images of domestic and institutional, each seeemed to strengthen the other -the door symbolic of a threshold, a place to nowhere or possibly anywhere.

Pieces of a second door were laid in the grass which had been left to grow –  when removed these left traces , but again were thought to diminish the effect of the single door on a wall – this has now been left in situ, alone on the wall … while the grass has been left to grow!  with a companion piece Inside Inside, Inside Outside will form part of the MA Art Practice show, Exit, September 2011.
